Therapy for Adoptees
Making sense of your adoption story:
Being adopted is not a single event - it is a lifelong experience. Many adoptees find that questions about who they are, where they came from, and where they truly belong begin to surface at different points in life. Sometimes these questions arrive quietly; sometimes they arrive with force - triggered by a relationship, a loss, becoming a parent, or simply a growing sense that something has never quite been resolved.
If you are an adoptee and you have found your way here, you may recognise some of this. You may feel a deep sense of not quite fitting, or carry a grief you have never been able to fully name. You may have wondered about your birth family, or found yourself struggling with closeness and trust in ways that are hard to explain. You may simply feel that your adoption is something you have never really been able to talk about - not properly, not with someone who understands.
This is exactly the work I do.
What Therapy for Adoptees Looks Like
I offer a safe, unhurried space where we can explore your experience together - at your pace, and without assumptions about how you feel or should feel about being adopted.
The themes that adoptees bring to therapy are wide-ranging, and might include:
• Early experiences of loss, separation or trauma
• Questions of identity, heritage and belonging
• The complexity of loving adoptive parents while still grieving birth family
• Searching for birth relatives - or deciding not to
• Navigating post-adoption contact arrangements
• Feeling different, or like an outsider, in relationships or family life
• The impact of adoption on becoming a parent yourself
• Patterns in relationships that feel rooted in early attachment experiences
• Life transitions that bring the adoption story back into focus
Some people come wanting to understand themselves better. Others are at a specific crossroads. Others have carried something unspoken for decades. All of this is welcome.
Why Work With Me
I am a qualified Group Analyst and UKCP-registered Psychotherapist, and I have completed the Certificate in Adoption Support Counselling at the Albany Centre - one of the UK’s leading specialist adoption training programmes. This means I bring not only psychotherapeutic depth but specific, current knowledge of adoption-informed practice.
I also have a background that has given me genuine understanding of complexity, transition and identity - including years living internationally, working across very different sectors, and supporting people through significant life change.
I work with adoptees both in short-term focused therapy and longer-term open-ended work, depending on what you need and where you are in your journey.
For Professionals and Referrers
I welcome referrals from solicitors, barristers, social workers, adoption agencies, schools and GPs who are supporting adoptees through legal, familial or personal processes.
With the client’s knowledge and consent, I am happy to liaise professionally with referrers.
If you would like to discuss a referral informally, please do get in touch.
